Whether you Penny board, long-board, or even surf, the skater look is the one for anyone who loves outdoors. The all time skater can be seen as the one who glides down a California boardwalk. The skater loves bright colors and gnarly brands. The skater strives to have fun and exotic patterns, such as Hawaiian printed vans, tie dye tanks, or floral strap backs. Streetwear can be a mixture of clean cut branded items and even bright tops. For hats, fedoras and French hats are not likely expected to be featured. However, the skater rocks Neff beanies and Supreme strap backs. This style is unisex and commonly worn by teens, but anyone who has a passion for shredding is welcome to sport the look.
From Penny boarding down LA to surfing in Florida, this look is sure to fit your skater girl style. Now, the question is do you really have to skate to pull off the outfits? The answer is a complete NO. Streetwear is for anyone who wants to stand out, but still have a style. If you like the conformity of Vans, then just do you. Anyone can pull off the look, as long as it expresses who they are.

Urban Hipster
This look is one of my personal favorites because the vibe of a hipster is intellectual, yet still current. This look is more toned down than streetwear and conveys a subtle image. The common hipster is mainly found in coffee shops, on the town, or doing something artsy. Typically, they pursue a life in the purity of arts. Whether it’s music, writing, designing, Photography, or modeling, the hipster enjoys it. Since the hipster has no desire to look like everyone, mainstream is dead to them. Why be anything else besides who you truly are?
Hipsters have a clean cut style, but do not try hard to appeal to others. A typical hipster is shown to have natural hair and evolve from uniqueness. Glam and glitz are out of the picture, since hipsters love simplicity. The best thing about the look is that hipsters don’t go all out whatsoever, but still have the look of fashion-ability. You can usually catch the common hipster creating Youtube Vlogs or listening to Indie music.(Like myself)
The home of the hipster is any downtown area like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and even downtown Phoenix. Unlike streetwear styles, the hipster doesn’t surf the turf. Instead, the activity they most partake in is what I am doing just now. Blogging. Hipsters are gaga for tumblr. The reason being is once again, their love for art. Hipsters love adventure, documenting their thoughts in words, and photography. The worldwide blog is born. Travel blogs, video blogs, fashion blogs; You name it.

Soft Grunge
Grunge was a movement that originated in the 90's. Musicians like Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Pink Floyd created this look. A relatable analogy of grunge:

The grunge style originally was unintentional because artists would wear the same sets of clothing day in and day out, resulting in a torn and worn out look. They did this because they generally did not care. Then, fans began noticing the carefree style, and they also began wearing the grunge style clothing.- For the careless look. This style demonstrates a hardcore persona, with the “I don’t care” attitude. Three words to describe this look? Wild, hardcore, dark. Now, you may think, “Why would anyone want to dress like they haven’t showered in days?”
Well, the answer is the symbolism. Some people want the harcore vibe. They want to stand out, but make a statement at the same time. They’re carefree, in the sense that they take the time to enjoy life. The clothing really does characterize the symbolism. This look consists of inverted crosses, flannels, and band shirts. One of the most major signs of soft grunge is the yin yang. The yin yang describes how contrary forces are interconnected, into one. Once again, symbolism is expressed.
Now that you know what grunge means, you’re probably wondering where the soft comes in. Soft grunge is basically an undertoned version of grunge. It’s the fashion symbolism, minus the hardcore life and lack of hygiene. Soft grunge is all about the symbolism and the music.

Girly
When we think of girly, we typically think of a barbie doll. Drowning in pink, obsession with glitter, and an expertise in makeup. However, it’s not just about being the most delicate flower in the garden. The girly girl also pursues a life in the love of fashion. The girly look isn’t hardcore like soft grunge and they aren’t as smooth as the hipster. The girly girl is a happy medium. She loves the pop of glitter, but still has a simple, sweet look.
When you see the girly girl, she isn’t overly decked out, but she is definitely not underdressed. What can you commonly see a girly girl wearing? The first most important note is soft colors. Some black accents here and there, but this look rarely ever includes an all black look. The more common tones and undertone colors are pastels. (Mint, Peach, off white, and of course pink) For the more showy person, the colors may include glitter, sparkle, and everything shiny in between.
We all know what the Streetwear Skater and the Active sporty person does, but do we know what the girly girl does? The stereotypes are the first point that comes to mind, but there’s more than just accessorizing to the girly girl. If this is your style, you are most likely to be seen painting your nails, watching the latest beauty gurus, and reading blogs. The Urban hipsters create the blogs, and the girly girls read them. It’s the cycle of style. Now, don’t be expected to do exactly what your genre of style is most likely to do. This basically tells you what expressing your style says.
In that case, show off your girly style. Why wouldn’t you? Every little girl dreamed of being a princess. Or a fashion designer with a Starbucks in hand, and a Chihuahua in her purse. With this style, it’s basically that 5-year-old girl’s dream being a reality.

Classic Fashion
If classic fashion is you, then you are perceived as intelligent and successful. WIth your sophistication, your style makes you even more eye catching. What exactly is Classic Fashion? First, those who have the Classic style are mainly Uptown business women. We’ve all seen one in any movie that takes place on the town. The business women, holding a designers bag, with larger than life shades. The Classic Fashion style is for those on the town, mainly seen in New York City. This look is best fit for city life; A business woman, wearing heels wouldn’t necessarily be found lounging on the beach.
Classic fashion can be considered high fashion’s baby sister. It derives from the high designer looks, yet it eliminated the exotic, peculiar items. The more common people to wear this classic look is anyone in the fashion industry: the designers, the coordinators, and the models. This fact also explains why formal business workers where this look, and nonetheless pull it off.
Then again, anyone can pull off this look. Even you. What really completes the classic fashion persona is not what brands you own, whether your occupation is in the business category, or if you live in the city. It’s all about personality. Confidence, sophistication, and determination. This is what pulls together the Classic fashion look.

Preppy
Characteristics of preps include a particular vocabulary, dress, and mannerisms. This “culture” comes from the expensive universities or prepatories. This is where the abbreviation, prep, comes from. The etiquette of this style also shows the persona of a prep. Unlike other styles, this one comes directly from America. Since the universities and prepatories are in America, this is where the look came from. This first came from the Ivy League style because they needed to dress in a formal manner to represent the prestige school.
Once other people began to notice the formality of the way they dressed, the style began to spread. The whole look of the preppy style is to be clean cut and fancy. This is an entire 360 of the grunge style. The grunge look is all about being effortless and vintage. Whereas the preppy style must look sophisticated and well put together. The influence on others was to have this sophistication. Now, by looking formal, that does not mean to be decked out in a black dress or a guy in a suit and tie. The look escalated from the school uniforms to adding your own flare. Unlike wearing identical uniforms as everyone else, they are allowed to wear different styles. However, the dress code stayed in the same manner.
This style shows that you are sophisticated and intelligent. Of course, this is true because the style did come from high ranked preparatories and Universities.

The vintage look comes from actual vintage clothing. Vintage clothing is that of used or passed down clothing. Hence the fact the style depicts style of a previous era. For example, the vintage clothing of today shows the style of the 90’s. Of course, the style is less expressed, and given a new outlook. By the 90’s, I mean the grunge stage. Since the grunge style is composed of the “used look”, the irony is actually convenient. The vintage style reintroduces a past era, while also portraying the actual vintage look.
The more common items of the vintage style includes flannels, distressed high waisted jeans, and even some hippie characteristics. Yes, I said hippie. We’re going even deeper into the past. Now, by hippie, I’m not referring to the tie dye wearing stereotypes. I’m talking about the actual hippies. Now, before I go in depth about the style, we’ll take a trip down memory lane.
The nation of America was shocked by the Vietnam War. Because of this, thousands of youthfuls showed their concern through campus rallies, antiwar demonstrations, and concerts for peace. This was basically a movement to showcase their rebellion against the war. The counterculture manifested its rebellion with: long hair, music (as showcased at Woodstock), and of course their style. With protests and anti-war demonstrations, the counterculture challenged the governmental institutions and values of American society.
The Hippie Movement was said to have started in San Francisco. They believed in the saying, "Make Love, Not War".
Now that we have a feel of who the hippies were, we can get the look. The earlier, less stereotypical, hippie had weeklong sit-ins and protests, so they wore the same clothes.-Giving the grunge style, and distressed look. This includes ripped jeans, faded band tees, and cutoff sleeves. With band tees being a large part, music was also an influence. Psychedelic music and soft rock were a large part because it showed their strive for peace with rebellion.
The main features of the vintage look is the beginning hippie and the late grunge look. Both looks together create the modern Vintage look. This style consists of army green pants, previously mentioned flannels, and band tees. Rock your vintage style, grab an acoustic guitar, and spread peace with rebellion.

High Fashion
High Fashion is daring, and uncommonly seen on an average day. The look consists of abstract, futuristic looks composed by top of the line fashion designers. Those who are most likely to be seen wearing this look are runway models and red carpet celebrities.
High Fashion is the Fo of the hipster. The hipster is all about doing what nobody else is.However, high fashion is all about out with the old and in with the new. A major place where this subject is highly expressed is New York Fashion Week. For those of you unaware of NY Fashion week, it is an event which allows designers and companies to display their latest collections. The most important part about fashion week is to let the industry know what is IN and what is OUT.
Because this type of fashion needs to be the best of the best, this explains why it needs to feature high end brands and exotic looks. It needs to be daring, eye catching, and abstract. The industry is similar to electronics. They want high end brands and innovative ideas. Think of your cell phone. You don’t want a cheap brand that has glitches and looks like a toy. We would much rather have a high speed, new and improved phone that can do what no other can do. The same goes with high fashion. They want new, vibrant ideas that will show off inventive looks.
The contributing factor of high fashion are new concepts depicted in an almost strange way. We’ve all seen the color techniques they use, and the artistic shapes they use. It’s all for the high fashion look.

Active Sporty
Every girl dreaded changing out for gym class. The stench of sweaty gym socks permeated the gym, searching for its next victim. We despised the required oversized PE shirt and basketball shorts. Been there, hated that. You’re probably thinking, “how is this even considered a style?” Well, that gym uniform we hated got a makeover. Who’s responsible for this drastic makeover? None other than the community of girls who dreaded the clothes for gym class. If you’re one of those girls, go ahead and thank yourself. Not only will you be thanking yourself, but upcoming generation PE students will be thanking you too.
Rather than unpleasant gym clothes, the active sporty look accentuates your toned and fit hard work. Unlike the soft grunge look, this style includes bright colors. Some may even sport neon colors. Also adding to the more pleasing look, baggy shorts were tossed out! Leggings, spandex, and clothes that actually fit replaced them.
Not only do the clothes compliment you better, but they were made for comfort. Don’t worry about getting blisters from your stilettos. Instead, slip into some Nike free runs. Not only are they light as a feather, but they are specialized for comfort. In almost all running shoes, there’s padding and cushioning. Newer shoes even include insulation! Running shoes are not only comfortable, but they are given a girly touch for the everyday fashionista. Go ahead, finally enjoy working out because of the new and improved active sporty style.

Bohemian (Boho)
The boho chic look is to look relaxed and vibrant. This look is almost the opposite of high fashion, yet designers took a grasp of the boho look. Evidentally, it was a big hit to the industry. High designers look for new trends to develop. Now, taking something old and turning into a new concept was brilliant.
The real look of this style is simplicity. Think of the later day hippie. Not the hippie that was alternative, but the “flower child” The hippie that came into the 70’s style. Bell bottoms and loose tops. This is the bohemian style. With flower crowns and John Lennon shades, the boho baby was born.
New twists to this look include tribal print and the “hammertime pants”. Why are these new features categorized as boho? Well, likewise on the fact that boho is a look of the past that was made modern also reflects of other old trends that were previous to today.
The final thought is boho is out with the new and in with the old.
